Overview
All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Gorakhpur, commonly known as AIIMS Gorakhpur, is a public medical university located in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. The institute functions as a tertiary care teaching hospital and a centre for medical education and research, in line with the broader mandate of the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences network.
AIIMS Gorakhpur is one of the twenty operational AIIMS institutions in India. These institutes were established by the Government of India to expand access to quality medical education and healthcare across different regions of the country.
It is counted among the four "Phase-IV" All India Institutes of Medical Sciences announced in July 2014. The Phase-IV expansion was part of the continuing rollout of new AIIMS centres under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, the central scheme aimed at correcting regional imbalances in the availability of affordable and reliable tertiary healthcare and at augmenting the country's pool of medical professionals.
