Background
The AIIMS network was originally founded with the establishment of AIIMS Delhi in 1956. Under successive phases of the PMSSY, the Government of India approved additional AIIMS institutions in different states with the objective of correcting regional imbalances in tertiary medical care and medical education. AIIMS Bilaspur was sanctioned as part of this expansion to serve Himachal Pradesh and the neighbouring hill regions, where access to advanced healthcare had historically been limited by terrain and infrastructure.
Campus and location
The institute is situated at Kothipura in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh. The site lies along the Bilaspur–Hamirpur corridor, providing road connectivity from the major towns of the lower Himalayan belt. The campus houses academic blocks, hospital and outpatient facilities, residential quarters for faculty, staff and students, and associated service infrastructure.
Academics
As an AIIMS, the institute functions as an autonomous Institute of National Importance and offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in medicine and allied health sciences, along with nursing education. The MBBS programme is the flagship undergraduate course, while postgraduate degrees are offered across major clinical and pre-clinical specialties. Admission to courses is conducted through national-level entrance examinations administered by the appropriate central agencies.
Hospital services
AIIMS Bilaspur provides outpatient, inpatient, emergency and specialty services. Departments span general medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedics, anaesthesiology, radiology, pathology and other clinical specialties typical of a tertiary referral centre. The hospital functions as a referral institution for districts of Himachal Pradesh and serves patients from adjoining areas.
Significance
AIIMS Bilaspur is the first AIIMS in Himachal Pradesh and represents a significant addition to the state's medical infrastructure, alongside existing institutions such as Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla and Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda. The institute is expected to reduce the need for patients in the western Himalayan region to travel to Chandigarh, Delhi or other metropolitan centres for advanced care, and to contribute to the training of medical professionals for the hill states.
