Overview

All India Institute of Medical Sciences Bhopal, commonly known as AIIMS Bhopal, is a premier public medical institution located in Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh. It is one of the new AIIMS institutions established by the Government of India under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), a scheme aimed at correcting regional imbalances in the availability of affordable and reliable tertiary-level healthcare in India. AIIMS Bhopal functions as an institute of national importance and operates under the administrative oversight of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Like other institutions in the AIIMS network, AIIMS Bhopal integrates medical education, postgraduate training, and patient care under a single institutional framework. It serves a large catchment population across Madhya Pradesh and neighbouring states, providing specialised medical services that were previously accessible only in metropolitan centres.

Background and Establishment

The original All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi was established in the 1950s as a model institution for medical education and research. Recognising the need to replicate this model across different regions of the country, the Government of India announced the creation of several new AIIMS institutions in the mid-2000s. AIIMS Bhopal was among the first batch of new AIIMS institutions approved under PMSSY, alongside institutions in cities such as Patna, Jodhpur, Rishikesh, Raipur, and BHUbaneswar.

The institution began academic operations in Bhopal and has since expanded its infrastructure, academic programmes, and clinical services considerably. Its location in Bhopal places it at the geographic and administrative heart of Madhya Pradesh, making it accessible to a large and diverse patient population from both urban and rural areas of central India.

Academics

AIIMS Bhopal offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in medicine and allied health sciences. The flagship undergraduate programme is the MBBS degree, admission to which is conducted through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) at the national level. Postgraduate medical degrees such as MD, MS, and diploma programmes are offered across a range of clinical and pre-clinical disciplines, with admissions conducted through NEET-PG and INI-CET examinations.

The institution also offers programmes in nursing, and has been progressively developing its research infrastructure to support PhD and post-doctoral work in biomedical sciences. Academic departments span disciplines including medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, psychiatry, orthopaedics, radiology, pathology, biochemistry, physiology, and community medicine, among others.

Hospital and Clinical Training

AIIMS Bhopal operates a teaching hospital that provides both outpatient and inpatient services across multiple specialities. The hospital functions as a tertiary referral centre for patients from Madhya Pradesh and adjoining regions. Clinical training is central to the institution's educational mission, and students at all levels participate in supervised patient care as part of their curriculum.

The hospital offers services in general medicine, surgical specialities, emergency and trauma care, diagnostic imaging, laboratory medicine, and several super-speciality areas. The emergency department handles a significant volume of trauma and critical care cases, reflecting the institution's role as a major public health resource in the region.

Campus and Facilities

The AIIMS Bhopal campus is located in the Saket Nagar area of Bhopal and includes the main hospital building, academic blocks, research laboratories, a central library, hostels for students and resident doctors, and residential quarters for faculty and staff. The campus has been developed in phases, with infrastructure continuing to expand in line with growing academic and clinical demands.

The central library provides access to medical journals, digital databases, and reference materials. On-campus hostels accommodate students from across India, contributing to a diverse residential community.

Admissions

Admissions to all programmes at AIIMS Bhopal are merit-based and conducted through centralised national examinations. MBBS admissions are through NEET-UG, while postgraduate medical admissions are through INI-CET, which is a common entrance test for all new AIIMS and similar central institutions. Reservations are applicable as per Government of India norms for scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, other backward classes, and economically weaker sections.

Student Life

AIIMS Bhopal has an active student community with academic clubs, cultural societies, and sports activities. Annual cultural and technical festivals provide students with opportunities beyond the classroom. Student bodies participate in governance through representation in institutional committees, consistent with the broader AIIMS tradition of student engagement.
