Background
Aligarh Muslim University, established in 1920 and tracing its origins to the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College founded by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan in 1875, has historically served as a major centre of higher education in India. To extend its outreach beyond Aligarh, AMU received approval from the Government of India to set up off-campus centres in different parts of the country. The Malappuram centre in Kerala was established as part of this initiative, alongside other centres such as those at Murshidabad in West Bengal and Kishanganj in Bihar.
Malappuram, situated in northern Kerala, has a substantial Muslim population and has historically been identified as a district where access to higher education needed strengthening. The choice of location reflected AMU's mandate to support educational advancement in communities with limited access to specialised university programmes.
Academics
The centre offers programmes in select disciplines, drawing on the academic framework of the parent university. Courses have included offerings in law, management, education, and related fields, with curricula and degrees aligned with those issued by Aligarh Muslim University. Admissions are conducted through AMU's centralised entrance examinations, and degrees are awarded by the parent university.
Significance
The Malappuram Centre represents one of the first instances of AMU operating an academic establishment in southern India. It contributes to the broader policy goal of regional diversification of central university education and provides students from Kerala and neighbouring states an opportunity to access AMU's programmes without relocating to Aligarh. The centre is also significant in the context of debates around the minority character of AMU and its role in expanding educational opportunities for underrepresented groups.
