Overview
Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is a collegiate, central, and research university located in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India. It traces its origins to the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College, which was established by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan in 1875.
The institution was elevated to the status of a university in 1920 following the enactment of the Aligarh Muslim University Act, when the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College became Aligarh Muslim University. The university grew out of the educational reform movement led by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, which sought to combine traditional learning with modern Western education.
AMU offers more than 300 courses across traditional and modern branches of education, spanning the arts, sciences, social sciences, engineering, medicine, law, management, and theology, among other fields. As a collegiate university, it comprises a number of constituent faculties, departments, and affiliated institutions.
The university is recognised as an Institute of National Importance and is listed in the Union List under the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution of India, placing it within the legislative competence of the Parliament of India.
