Background

The railway station is one of the principal transport nodes for the city and the surrounding districts, handling passenger traffic to Delhi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Howrah and other major destinations across the country.

The station lies on the historic Howrah–Delhi main line, one of the oldest and busiest trunk routes of Indian Railways, originally developed by the East Indian Railway Company in the nineteenth century. As a junction, Aligarh also connects to a branch line running towards Bareilly via Chandausi, providing access to the Rohilkhand region.

Layout and facilities

The station has multiple platforms equipped with foot over-bridges, waiting halls, refreshment stalls, computerised reservation counters and unreserved ticketing windows. Passenger amenities include retiring rooms, drinking water facilities and a parcel office. The route through Aligarh is fully electrified and double-tracked, supporting a high density of express, mail, superfast and freight services.

Significance

Owing to its position on the Delhi–Howrah corridor, Aligarh Junction sees a large volume of through traffic, including premier services such as Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto and Vande Bharat trains, several of which halt at the station. It is one of the highest revenue-earning stations in the Prayagraj division and is classified among the major non-suburban grade stations of Indian Railways. The station also plays a role in commuter movement to Delhi NCR and serves the academic community of Aligarh Muslim University.
