Aliah University

Overview

Aliah University is a state public university located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Established by an Act of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly in 2008, it traces its institutional lineage to the Mohammedan College of Calcutta, popularly known as the Calcutta Madrasah, founded in 1780 by Warren Hastings, the first Governor-General of Bengal. The transformation of the historic madrasah into a modern university makes Aliah one of the few institutions in India that bridges classical Islamic scholarship with contemporary higher education in science, technology, and the humanities.

Background

The Calcutta Madrasah, founded in 1780, is widely regarded as one of the earliest institutions of formal higher education established under British administration in India. For more than two centuries it functioned as a centre for Arabic, Persian, and Islamic studies, and trained generations of scholars, jurists, and civil servants in eastern India. Over time, the madrasah expanded its curriculum to include modern subjects, and demands grew for upgrading it to a full-fledged university serving the Muslim community and other learners across West Bengal.

Following these long-standing demands, the Government of West Bengal enacted the Aliah University Act, 2007, leading to the formal creation of Aliah University in 2008. The new institution absorbed the legacy of the Calcutta Madrasah and was constituted as an autonomous state university with the authority to award undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral degrees.

Campuses

The university operates from multiple campuses in Kolkata, including a campus at Park Circus and a purpose-built main campus at New Town in the Rajarhat area. The New Town campus serves as the principal academic and administrative centre, while the older Park Circus location continues to host certain departments and student facilities.

Academics

Aliah University offers programmes across a range of disciplines, including:

  • Engineering and technology
  • Computer science and information technology
  • Management studies
  • Natural and applied sciences
  • Arts, humanities, and social sciences
  • Islamic theology, Arabic, and Islamic studies
  • Education and teacher training

Programmes are offered at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and research levels, and the university also conducts certificate and diploma courses in specialised areas. Instruction is provided in English, with provision for Arabic, Urdu, and Bengali in relevant programmes.

Governance

As a state public university, Aliah University is governed under the provisions of the Aliah University Act. The Governor of West Bengal serves as the Visitor of the university in keeping with the convention applicable to state universities in India. The Vice-Chancellor functions as the principal academic and executive officer, supported by statutory bodies such as the Court, Executive Council, and Academic Council.

Significance

Aliah University holds particular importance as the institutional successor to the 1780 Calcutta Madrasah, giving it a documented heritage that predates most modern Indian universities. It plays a notable role in expanding access to higher education for minority communities in West Bengal while functioning as a general-purpose state university open to students from all backgrounds. Its combined focus on traditional Islamic learning and modern professional education distinguishes it within the Indian university landscape.
