Background

Quantrill was born in British India in the closing years of the nineteenth century, a fact which has led to his inclusion in lists of footballers connected to India by birth. He was, however, English by nationality and developed his football career entirely within England, where his family settled.

Club career

Quantrill joined Derby County, then one of the established sides of the Football League, and broke into the senior team during the period immediately following the First World War. Operating chiefly on the left flank, he became a regular in the Derby attack as the club competed in the First and Second Divisions in the early 1920s.

He subsequently moved to Preston North End, another long-standing Football League club, before further spells with Chesterfield and Nottingham Forest. His career spanned the inter-war years, a period in which league football in England was being re-established after the wartime suspension of competitive fixtures.

International career

Quantrill was capped at full international level by England, the recognition coming during his time at Derby County. His selection placed him among a relatively small group of footballers of his generation to represent the senior England side.

Significance

Although his career was largely a club one, Quantrill is remembered as one of several early twentieth-century English professionals born on the Indian subcontinent during the period of British rule. As such he is occasionally listed in surveys of footballers with Indian birthplaces, alongside others of similar background.
