International career
Twenty20 Internationals

His unbeaten 116 against Sri Lanka during the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 was, at the time, the highest individual score by an English batter in the format. He is also recorded as the first batter to be dismissed for 99 in both an ODI and a T20I.

Test cricket
Hales made his Test debut against South Africa in December 2015.
2022 T20 World Cup

Retirement from international cricket
In August 2023, Hales announced his retirement from international cricket, choosing to focus on domestic and franchise Twenty20 competitions.
Significance
Hales is regarded as a pioneering figure in England's modern white-ball batting tradition. As the first English batter to record a T20I century, he was among the early standard-bearers for the aggressive opening style that later became central to England's limited-overs success, including the 2022 T20 World Cup triumph.
