Overview
The station is named in honour of Arignar Anna, the honorific for C. N. Annadurai, a former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. As an elevated facility, it functions as a junction point where passengers can transfer between the Blue Line, which broadly connects Washermenpet with Chennai International Airport, and the Green Line, which runs between Chennai Central and St. Thomas Mount via Koyambedu.
Background
Chennai Metro is operated by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu. The first phase of the network was planned to provide rapid transit links between major commercial, residential, and transport hubs of the city, including Chennai Central, Koyambedu, Guindy, and the airport. Alandur was identified early in the planning as a strategic interchange because the alignments of the two phase-one lines converge in this area before continuing to their respective terminals.
Significance
As one of the few interchange stations on the Chennai Metro, Alandur plays an important role in distributing passenger traffic between the corridors serving the airport and St. Thomas Mount on one side and the central business areas on the other. Its location near the Inner Ring Road and the residential neighbourhoods of Alandur, Nanganallur, and Adambakkam makes it a key access point for commuters travelling to Guindy, the IT corridor, and the airport.
Layout
The station is built as an elevated structure with platforms serving the two lines, along with concourse-level facilities for ticketing, security checks, and passenger circulation. Standard Chennai Metro amenities include automatic fare collection gates, escalators, lifts, and signage in Tamil and English.
Connectivity
- Road access from the Inner Ring Road and the GST Road corridor.
