Background

The Lucknow Metro project is implemented by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC), formerly the Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC). The North–South Corridor was planned as a 22.878 km route from Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in the south to Munshipulia in the north, with 21 stations. Alambagh metro station is one of the southern-section stations on this corridor.

History

Commercial operations on the priority section of the Red Line, between Transport Nagar and Charbagh, commenced on 5 September 2017, with Alambagh among the stations opened in this initial phase. The full North–South Corridor from the airport to Munshipulia was inaugurated for public service on 8 March 2019, integrating Alambagh into the end-to-end metro network.

Layout and facilities

The station has a standard three-level elevated configuration:

  • Ground level: Entry/exit, station access and street interface.
  • Concourse level: Ticketing counters, automatic fare collection gates, customer service and security screening.
  • Platform level: Two side platforms serving trains in each direction.

Passenger amenities include lifts, escalators, staircases, Braille-enabled signage, drinking water, and CCTV surveillance. Token and smart card based fare collection is supported.

The station provides interchange to road-based public transport, including Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) services from the nearby Alambagh Bus Terminal, as well as city buses and auto-rickshaws operating on Kanpur Road.

Significance

Alambagh is a high-density transit catchment because of its proximity to Charbagh railway station, the Alambagh ISBT and major arterial roads. The metro station thus plays a notable role in last-mile and intra-city connectivity for both daily commuters and outstation travellers transferring between rail, bus and metro services.
