Background
Indian general entertainment channel Sony SAB, traditionally known for comedy programming, expanded into mythological and fantasy storytelling in the late 2010s. Aladdin – Naam Toh Suna Hoga formed part of this slate alongside other fantasy titles produced for the channel. The show was created by Peninsula Pictures, the production house founded by Gul Khan and Nissar Parvez, which had earlier produced supernatural and romantic dramas for Indian television.
The narrative is set in the fictional city of Baghdad and follows Aladdin, a young thief with a strong sense of justice, his beloved Yasmine, and the magical Genie of the lamp. The series adapts familiar elements of the Arabian Nights — the magic lamp, the cave of wonders, sorcerers, and flying carpets — while introducing original story arcs, antagonists, and supporting characters.
Cast
The series featured several lead actors over its three-year run, with the role of Aladdin being played by different actors across phases of the show.
- Siddharth Nigam as Aladdin (initial lead)
- Avneet Kaur as Yasmine (initial female lead)
- Raashul Tandon and later Praneet Bhatt in roles connected with the Genie
- Ashi Singh as Yasmine in later episodes
- Aamir Dalvi in an antagonist role
The cast went through changes during the show's run, with leads being replaced as storylines progressed and time leaps were introduced.
Production and broadcast
The show was filmed primarily in Mumbai, with extensive use of visual effects to depict magic, the Genie, the lamp, flying sequences, and supernatural creatures. It was telecast in a primetime slot on Sony SAB and was also made available on the streaming service SonyLIV.
Episodes were produced in a daily-soap format typical of Indian television, with continuing storylines, time jumps, and seasonal narrative arcs. The series ran for three seasons across its broadcast period before concluding in October 2021.
Reception and significance
The series was among Sony SAB's notable forays into youth-oriented fantasy fiction and helped position the channel beyond its core comedy identity. It contributed to the public visibility of younger actors such as Siddharth Nigam and Avneet Kaur, both of whom went on to build significant followings on social media. The show is frequently cited as part of a wave of Indian television adaptations of foreign folktales and mythologies aimed at family viewership.
