Background

The Pune–Lonavala corridor on which Akurdi lies is one of the oldest railway routes in western India, forming part of the historic alignment built by the Great Indian Peninsula Railway in the mid-nineteenth century to connect Bombay (Mumbai) with Pune across the Bhor Ghat. After Independence, the line passed to Central Railway. With the rapid industrialisation of the Pimpri-Chinchwad belt from the 1960s onwards, several intermediate halts and stations along the corridor, including Akurdi, gained importance as commuter points.

Location and surroundings

Akurdi is among the southern suburbs of Pimpri-Chinchwad, lying close to the Mumbai–Pune highway and the Pune Metropolitan Region's industrial estates. The station is flanked by Chinchwad to the south-east and Dehu Road to the north-west on the suburban line. The neighbourhood hosts educational institutions, residential colonies, and units linked to the broader automotive and engineering industry of Pimpri-Chinchwad.

Services

The station is primarily served by Pune suburban EMU services running between Pune Junction and Lonavala. These services form a key mode of daily transit for office-goers, students, and factory workers in the Pimpri-Chinchwad belt. Long-distance express and mail trains generally pass through without halting.

Significance

As a suburban node, Akurdi station contributes to the multi-modal connectivity of the Pune metropolitan area, complementing road-based transport along the Old Mumbai–Pune Highway and feeder bus routes operated by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Transport (PCMT) and PMPML. Its catchment includes residential pockets that have grown around the industrial estates of Chinchwad and Akurdi.
