Akhilesh Das

Akhilesh Das Gupta (1961–2017) was an Indian politician, businessman and educationist from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. He served as a Member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, and held office as a Union Minister of State in the Government of India. He was associated at different times with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Indian National Congress, and was prominent in the educational and civic life of Lucknow.

Background

Akhilesh Das was born into the family of Banarsi Das Gupta, a businessman and public figure from Lucknow. The family was active in education, industry and civic affairs in Uttar Pradesh, and Akhilesh Das continued this association through patronage of educational institutions and trusts in the city.

Political career

Das entered electoral politics through Lucknow's municipal administration before moving to national-level office. He served as a Member of the Rajya Sabha representing Uttar Pradesh, and during his parliamentary career was inducted as a Union Minister of State in the central government.

Originally aligned with the Indian National Congress, he later joined the Bahujan Samaj Party led by Mayawati, and held organisational responsibilities within the party. His career reflected the shifting alignments of Uttar Pradesh politics in the 2000s and early 2010s.

Other activities

Apart from politics, Das was associated with educational and sports administration. He was involved with the Badminton Association of India and supported various educational and charitable initiatives based in Lucknow.

Akhilesh Das died in 2017.
