Overview

Ajni lies on the Howrah–Nagpur–Mumbai main line, one of the principal trunk routes of the Indian railway network. The station is closely linked operationally with Nagpur Junction, and the area around Ajni hosts important railway infrastructure, including a large electric locomotive shed and railway colonies.

Infrastructure

Ajni is best known among railway enthusiasts and operating staff for the Ajni Electric Loco Shed, one of the major electric locomotive maintenance facilities under the Central Railway zone. The shed houses high-powered freight and passenger locomotives, including modern three-phase classes used on long-distance services across central India.

The station precinct also accommodates railway staff quarters, a goods handling area, and connecting yard infrastructure that supports operations at Nagpur Junction.

Services

Ajni handles a mix of passenger and express trains, and acts as a halt for several long-distance services, easing pressure on Nagpur Junction. Many trains running between Mumbai, Howrah, Chennai and Delhi pass through Ajni, although only a portion stop here. The station is electrified and lies on a double-track section of the trunk line.

Location and connectivity

The station is located in south Nagpur and is connected to the rest of the city by road. It is served by city buses and auto-rickshaws, and is situated close to major arterial roads of Nagpur. Its proximity to Nagpur Junction allows passengers to reach the central railhead within a short journey.

Significance

As part of the Nagpur railway complex, Ajni contributes to the operational capacity of one of the busiest junctions in central India. The presence of the electric loco shed makes Ajni an important node in the haulage of freight and passenger trains across the Central Railway and adjoining zones.
