Background

Tamta hails from the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, a Himalayan state in northern India formed in 2000 after being carved out of Uttar Pradesh. The Almora constituency, which he represents in the Lok Sabha, is a reserved seat for Scheduled Castes and covers parts of the Kumaon division, including the districts of Almora, Bageshwar, Champawat and Pithoragarh.

Political career

Tamta has been a long-standing functionary of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Uttarakhand. Before entering national politics, he was active in state-level politics in the Kumaon region.

He was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Almora (SC) constituency on a BJP ticket. During his tenure in Parliament, he was inducted into the Union Council of Ministers as a Minister of State, with responsibilities relating to the Ministry of Textiles, a portfolio significant for India's handloom and handicraft sectors, including the traditional crafts of the Himalayan states.
