Overview
Aishbagh is situated in the western part of Lucknow and serves as an important node for trains operated by the North Eastern Railway zone. The station has historically been associated with the metre gauge network of the region, and was a prominent metre gauge junction before the gauge conversion programme of Indian Railways progressively replaced metre gauge lines with broad gauge across Uttar Pradesh.
Lines and connections
Aishbagh lies at the meeting point of routes that connect Lucknow with destinations such as Kanpur, Mailani, Sitapur and onwards towards the railway corridors leading to Delhi and Varanasi. The station is linked within the Lucknow railway complex, which also includes Lucknow Charbagh railway station, Lucknow Junction railway station and Gomti Nagar railway station.
Background
The station traces its origins to the railway expansion undertaken in the United Provinces during the colonial period, when narrow and metre gauge lines were laid to connect Lucknow with the surrounding agricultural districts and the Terai region. After Indian independence in 1947, the lines passing through Aishbagh came under the administration of Indian Railways, and from 1952 they were placed within the newly constituted North Eastern Railway zone.
Under the Project Unigauge initiative launched by Indian Railways in the 1990s, large portions of the metre gauge network radiating from Aishbagh were progressively converted to broad gauge. This phased conversion altered the operational character of the station, with several routes being temporarily withdrawn during the conversion work and later restored as broad gauge services.
Significance
Aishbagh provides relief to the heavily used Lucknow Charbagh terminus by handling a share of passenger services, and acts as a gateway for trains coming in from the north-eastern hinterland of Uttar Pradesh. The station is also notable for its proximity to the Aishbagh Idgah and other landmarks of old Lucknow, making it locally accessible for residents of the western parts of the city.
