Overview
The station forms part of the north–south Orange Line of the Nagpur Metro, which connects the city centre at Sitabuldi with Khapri in the south. It is situated near the southern side of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, from which it takes its name, and is placed adjacent to the neighbouring Airport metro station on the same corridor.
Background
The Nagpur Metro project is implemented by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro), a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Maharashtra. The first phase of the network comprises two lines arranged in a cross pattern, intersecting at Sitabuldi Interchange. The Orange Line runs from Automotive Square in the north to Khapri in the south, while the Aqua Line runs east–west between Lokmanya Nagar and Prajapati Nagar.
Airport South lies on the southern segment of the Orange Line, in the stretch that passes the airport precinct before continuing toward New Airport, Khapri and the integrated depot at Mihan.
Layout and facilities
As an elevated station, Airport South features a standard configuration with a concourse level and a platform level above the road. It has side platforms serving the two directions of travel along the Orange Line. Passenger amenities typically provided at Nagpur Metro stations include automatic fare collection gates, ticket vending and customer-care counters, lifts, escalators and staircases connecting the street, concourse and platform levels.
Connections
The station is positioned along the Wardha Road corridor, the principal arterial road linking central Nagpur with the airport, Mihan and the southern suburbs. It provides metro access to areas around the southern boundary of the airport and to nearby commercial and residential developments along Wardha Road.
Significance
Along with the adjacent Airport station, Airport South improves public-transport access to the airport precinct and the Mihan special economic zone, which together form one of Nagpur's principal employment and aviation hubs. It contributes to the broader objective of the Nagpur Metro of reducing road congestion on the heavily used Wardha Road corridor.
