Overview
Airport Road metro station lies between Marol Naka and Chakala (J. B. Nagar) on Line 1, the first operational rapid transit corridor of the Mumbai Metro. The 11.4 km Versova–Andheri–Ghatkopar line runs east–west across the suburbs of Mumbai, providing a transverse alternative to the city's predominantly north–south suburban railway network.
Despite its name, the station is not directly attached to either of the airport terminals. It is, however, the closest Line 1 stop to Terminal 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, with onward connectivity by road.
History
Line 1 was developed as a public–private partnership between the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and a consortium led by Reliance Infrastructure, operating through the special purpose vehicle Mumbai Metro One Pvt. Ltd. Construction of the corridor began in 2008. Airport Road station, along with the rest of the line, was opened to the public on 8 June 2014.
Layout
The station follows the standard layout used across Line 1, with a street-level entrance, a concourse housing ticketing and security, and an upper platform level. Two side platforms serve trains in the direction of Versova and Ghatkopar respectively.
Connectivity
- Air: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (Terminal 2) is accessible by road from the station.
- Road: The station is situated on the Western Express Highway corridor, near the Sahar Road junction.
- Bus: Served by routes of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST).
- Future interchange: An interchange with Line 7 and Line 3 services is planned in the surrounding Andheri East cluster, integrating airport-bound metro travel.
Significance
The station is among the busier stops on Line 1 because of its location in the office and commercial belt of Andheri East, including the MIDC and SEEPZ neighbourhoods, and its role as a feeder for air travellers heading to or from the international airport.
