International career
Markram made his international debut for South Africa in September 2017. In the 2018 edition of the South African Cricket Annual, he was named as one of the five "Cricketers of the Year". He has subsequently been entrusted with leadership responsibilities, taking over as captain of South Africa in T20Is and serving as vice-captain in the ODI and Test sides.

Markram was a member of the South African team that won the 2025 ICC World Test Championship final, the second ICC title in the country's history. He was named Player of the Match after scoring 136 off 207 balls in the second innings, an innings central to South Africa's victory.
Franchise cricket
In domestic and franchise cricket, Markram captained Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 league, which was launched in 2022. He led the franchise from its inception, guiding it to two consecutive SA20 titles in 2022 and 2023, before his release ahead of the 2025 SA20 auction.

As an under-19 World Cup winning captain who progressed to senior international leadership, he is regarded as a key figure in South Africa's batting line-up and captaincy structure. His Player-of-the-Match performance in the 2025 World Test Championship final placed him at the centre of one of the most significant achievements in South African cricket history.
