Agartala railway station is the main railway station serving Agartala, the capital city of the Indian state of Tripura. It is operated by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) zone of Indian Railways and is one of the principal rail gateways to the state.

Background
Tripura, lying in India's northeastern region, was historically isolated from the national rail grid owing to its hilly terrain and the partitioning of the subcontinent in 1947, which left the state surrounded on three sides by Bangladesh. The railhead's extension to Agartala formed part of a broader programme by the Government of India to connect the capitals of the northeastern states by rail.
History and timeline
- 2008–2009: The metre gauge line from Kumarghat was extended to Agartala, bringing the city onto the national rail map for the first time.
- 2008: The station was inaugurated, with services initially operating on metre gauge.
- 2016: Following gauge conversion of the Lumding–Badarpur–Agartala route, broad gauge services commenced, allowing direct trains to other parts of India.
- 2017: The Tripura Sundari Express began running between Agartala and Anand Vihar Terminal in Delhi, providing a direct broad gauge link to the national capital.
- 2019 onwards: The line was progressively extended southwards through Udaipur to Sabroom, near the Bangladesh border.
Cross-border connectivity
A separate cross-border rail link between Agartala and Akhaura in Bangladesh has been developed jointly by India and Bangladesh. The project, executed on the Indian side by Ircon International, is intended to provide a short rail route connecting Tripura with the port of Chittagong and to reduce travel distances between Agartala and Kolkata via Bangladeshi territory.

The station handles a mix of long-distance express trains and intra-state passenger services. It serves as the originating or terminating point for several express trains connecting Agartala with destinations such as Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Guwahati, Silchar and Sabroom. Passenger amenities at the station include waiting halls, retiring rooms, computerised reservation, parking and catering services.
Significance
Agartala railway station is significant as the rail terminus of the Tripura state capital and as one of the few state-capital railheads in northeastern India to be linked with the broad gauge network. Its development has reduced dependence on road transport along National Highway 8 (formerly NH-44) through Assam, and is regarded as an important step in the economic integration of Tripura with the rest of the country.
