Geography
The district lies in the Malwa region of western Madhya Pradesh, characterised by black cotton soil and a semi-arid climate suitable for the cultivation of soybean, wheat, gram and oilseeds. It shares borders with the districts of Shajapur, Rajgarh, Ujjain and Mandsaur within Madhya Pradesh, and with parts of Rajasthan to the north-west.
Administration
The district is administered by a District Collector and a Superintendent of Police, working under the Ujjain divisional commissioner. Agar Malwa is organised into several tehsils, including Agar, Susner, Barod, Nalkheda and Soyat.
Economy
The economy of Agar Malwa is predominantly agrarian. Soybean is the principal kharif crop, while wheat, gram and coriander are widely grown in the rabi season. Trade in agricultural produce, edible oil processing and small-scale agro-industries form the bulk of non-farm activity.
Culture and notable places
Nalkheda, in the district, is known for the temple of Maa Baglamukhi, a Shakti shrine that draws pilgrims from across central India and Rajasthan. Agar town itself contains the historic Baijnath Mahadev temple complex. The district lies along routes that historically connected Malwa with the Mewar region, contributing to a shared cultural heritage.
