Background

Aligarh Muslim University organises its residential life through a system of halls, each of which is composed of multiple hostels. The halls function as semi-autonomous units that look after student welfare, discipline, sports, cultural activities and dining arrangements. Aftab Hall is one such hall designated for male students of the university.

The hall system at AMU traces its origins to the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College founded by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan in 1875, which was elevated to university status in 1920. The residential ethos of the institution, modelled in part on the collegiate traditions of Oxford and Cambridge, has remained a defining feature of student life on the Aligarh campus.

Organisation

Like other halls at AMU, Aftab Hall is administered by a Provost, assisted by Wardens drawn from the university faculty. Each constituent hostel is overseen by resident wardens, and student affairs are coordinated through hall committees that organise sports tournaments, debates, literary events and the annual hall day.

Significance

Halls of residence such as Aftab Hall form an integral component of the AMU experience, contributing to the social, cultural and extracurricular development of students alongside their academic studies. Inter-hall competitions in sports and cultural activities are a long-standing tradition on the campus.
