He gained wider recognition in the early 2010s with roles in mainstream Tollywood productions, and steadily established himself as a leading actor in Bengali cinema, working with several prominent directors of the contemporary period.

Career

Chatterjee is most closely associated with detective and mystery roles in Bengali cinema. He played Byomkesh Bakshi in director Anjan Dutt's Byomkesh Bakshi series, beginning with Byomkesh Bakshi (2010), and later reprised the character in further films in the franchise. He subsequently took on the role of Feluda, the detective created by Satyajit Ray, in films directed by Sandip Ray, including Badshahi Angti (2014) and Double Feluda (2016), making him one of the few actors to have portrayed both iconic Bengali sleuths on screen.

Apart from the detective genre, Chatterjee has appeared in a range of mainstream and independent Bengali films, taking on romantic leads, family dramas, and ensemble roles. He has worked with directors such as Srijit Mukherji, Kaushik Ganguly, and others associated with contemporary Bengali cinema.

Significance

Within Bengali cinema, Chatterjee is regarded as one of the prominent leading men of his generation. His portrayals of Byomkesh and Feluda have placed him in a lineage of actors — including Uttam Kumar, Soumitra Chatterjee, Sabyasachi Chakrabarty and others — who have given screen presence to the literary detectives that occupy a central place in Bengali popular culture.
