Background

Abhijit Mukherjee was born into the Mukherjee family of Birbhum district in West Bengal. His father, Pranab Mukherjee, was a senior Congress leader, a long-serving Union Minister handling portfolios such as Finance, External Affairs and Defence, and later President of India from 2012 to 2017. Before entering electoral politics, Abhijit Mukherjee trained as an engineer and worked in technical and corporate roles.

Political career

Abhijit Mukherjee began his elected political career as a Member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, representing the Nalhati constituency in Birbhum district on a Congress ticket.

Following his father's election as President of India in 2012, the Jangipur Lok Sabha seat in Murshidabad district, which Pranab Mukherjee had held, fell vacant. Abhijit Mukherjee contested the resulting by-election on a Congress ticket and won, entering the 15th Lok Sabha. He was re-elected from Jangipur in the 2014 general election to the 16th Lok Sabha.

During his terms in the Lok Sabha, he served on parliamentary committees associated with the lower house. He contested the 2019 general election from Jangipur but was unsuccessful.

Significance

Abhijit Mukherjee's political career is closely linked with the Jangipur parliamentary constituency in Murshidabad district, a seat long associated with his father. His tenure represented a continuation of the Mukherjee family's political presence in the Congress organisation in West Bengal during a period when the party's electoral footprint in the state was contracting amid the rise of the All India Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party.
