Background and early life
Kalam was born into a Tamil Muslim family in the temple town of Rameswaram on Pamban Island, in what is today the Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu. His father, Jainulabdeen, was a boat owner and imam of a local mosque, and his mother, Ashiamma, was a homemaker. Despite modest means, the family encouraged his early curiosity in science and reading.
He completed his schooling at Schwartz Higher Secondary School in Ramanathapuram and graduated in physics from St. Joseph's College, Tiruchirappalli, then affiliated to the University of Madras. He subsequently studied aerospace engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology (MIT), Chennai, completing his programme in 1960.
Scientific career
Early years at DRDO and ISRO
Kalam joined the Aeronautical Development Establishment of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in 1960 as a scientist, where he worked on a small hovercraft. In 1969 he was transferred to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), where he was appointed project director of India's first Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III). Under his leadership, the SLV-III successfully placed the Rohini satellite in near-earth orbit in July 1980, making India a member of the small group of nations with indigenous launch capability.
Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme
Returning to DRDO in the early 1980s, Kalam directed the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP), approved by the Government of India in 1983. The programme produced a series of strategic and tactical missiles, including Prithvi, Agni, Trishul, Akash, and Nag. His leadership of these projects earned him the popular epithet "Missile Man of India".
Pokhran-II
As Scientific Adviser to the Prime Minister and Secretary of the Department of Defence Research and Development from 1992, Kalam played a key organisational and technical role in the Pokhran-II nuclear tests conducted by India in May 1998 in Rajasthan, working closely with R. Chidambaram of the Department of Atomic Energy.
Presidency (2002–2007)
Kalam was elected President of India in July 2002, succeeding K. R. Narayanan, with broad support across political parties. He was sworn in on 25 July 2002. During his term he was popularly described as the "People's President" for his outreach to students and citizens. Notable episodes of his tenure included his return of the Office of Profit Bill to Parliament for reconsideration in 2006. He chose not to seek a second term and demitted office on 25 July 2007, succeeded by Pratibha Patil.
Later life, teaching and writing
After leaving Rashtrapati Bhavan, Kalam returned to teaching and public engagement, holding visiting and honorary positions at institutions including the Indian Institute of Management Shillong, the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, the Indian Institute of Management Indore, the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology Thiruvananthapuram, Anna University, and the Banaras Hindu University. He authored several books, including Wings of Fire (an autobiography), India 2020, Ignited Minds, and Turning Points.
He died on 27 July 2015 after collapsing during a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong. He was given a state funeral at Rameswaram, where a memorial was later built by DRDO.
