Background

Nesamony hailed from the southern Tamil-speaking region of the princely state of Travancore, an area where Tamil-speaking communities had long voiced concerns about linguistic, administrative and developmental neglect under a predominantly Malayalam-speaking administration. Trained as a lawyer, he entered public life through community work and became a prominent voice for the rights of the Tamil population of South Travancore.

Political career

Nesamony was active in the Travancore State Congress and later in the Indian National Congress. He served as a legislator representing constituencies in the South Travancore region, and was associated with the Travancore–Cochin legislature in the years following Indian independence.

The merger movement

The defining cause of Nesamony's political life was the demand that the Tamil-majority taluks of South Travancore — Agastheeswaram, Thovalai, Kalkulam and Vilavancode — be transferred to the neighbouring Madras State on linguistic grounds. He led sustained agitations, public mobilisation and legislative advocacy on this issue through the late 1940s and the early 1950s.

The States Reorganisation Commission, set up in the mid-1950s to reorganise Indian states on linguistic lines, recommended the transfer of these taluks. With the implementation of the States Reorganisation Act, 1956, the four taluks were merged with Madras State (later renamed Tamil Nadu in 1969) and constituted as the new Kanyakumari district. Nesamony's leadership in achieving this outcome earned him the honorific "Marshal".
