A. H. Sahu Khan

A. H. Sahu Khan (1918–2007) was a Fijian politician of Indian origin who served in the Parliament of Fiji during the post-independence era. He was a member of the Indo-Fijian community, which descended from indentured labourers brought from British India to the Fijian sugar colonies between 1879 and 1916, and he represented its political interests in the decades following Fiji's independence in 1970.

Background

Sahu Khan belonged to the Indo-Fijian population, the descendants of South Asian labourers who arrived in Fiji under the indenture system known locally as girmit. By the mid-twentieth century this community had become an integral part of Fiji's social, economic, and political life, particularly in the sugar-producing districts of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Indo-Fijian politicians of Sahu Khan's generation were prominent in trade unions, agricultural associations, and the legislative bodies that emerged in the late colonial period.

Political context

Fiji gained independence from the United Kingdom on 10 October 1970. The new constitutional framework provided for communal representation, with seats reserved for indigenous Fijians, Indo-Fijians, and a "general" category covering other communities. Indo-Fijian political activity during this period was largely channelled through the National Federation Party (NFP), which contested constituencies dominated by the Indo-Fijian electorate, and later through the Fiji Labour Party from 1985 onwards.

Significance

Politicians of Sahu Khan's cohort played a key role in shaping the parliamentary representation of the Indo-Fijian community in the period between Fijian independence and the 1987 military coups led by Sitiveni Rabuka, which significantly altered the country's constitutional order. Their work in the legislature contributed to debates on land tenure, sugar industry reforms, education policy, and the rights of citizens of Indian descent in Fiji.
