Background

Ghani Khan Choudhury came from the prominent Kotwali family of Malda in northern West Bengal, a region bordering Bangladesh. The family has long been influential in the politics of the Malda region, and several of his siblings and relatives have also held public office at the state and national level.

Political career

Ghani Khan Choudhury built his early political base in the Malda district through the Indian National Congress. He served in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly before moving to national politics, and went on to win the Malda Lok Sabha seat repeatedly, becoming one of the few Congress leaders to retain a stronghold in West Bengal during the long period of Left Front dominance in the state.

Union Minister

He held cabinet rank in the Union Government during the 1980s. As Minister of Railways, he is widely associated with several rail development initiatives in eastern India, particularly in North Bengal and the Malda region, including the expansion of railway facilities and the establishment of the Malda railway division as an important operational hub on the Eastern Railway network.

Later years

Ghani Khan Choudhury continued to be elected from Malda through the 1990s and into the 2000s, remaining a senior figure within the West Bengal unit of the Congress until his death in 2006. After his demise, the Malda seat continued to be associated with members of his family.

Significance

Ghani Khan Choudhury is remembered as one of the most durable Congress politicians from West Bengal in the post-Independence era. His tenure as Railway Minister left a visible imprint on the railway infrastructure of eastern India, and his political base in Malda made the district one of the few consistent Congress bastions in a state otherwise dominated by the Left Front for decades. Several public institutions in the Malda region have been named in his honour, including an engineering college.
