Overview

All India Institute of Medical Sciences Patna (AIIMS Patna), previously known as Jaya Prakash Narayan All India Institute of Medical Sciences (JPNAIIMS), is a public medical college and medical research institute located in Phulwari Sharif, Patna, Bihar, India. It is one of the Institutes of National Importance in India and operates autonomously under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The foundation of the institute was laid by Bhairon Singh Shekhawat on 3 January 2004, during his tenure as vice-president of India. After a series of observations by the Patna High Court, the institute began operations on 16 July 2012. It became fully functional in 2018.

Background

AIIMS Patna is among the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences established to expand tertiary healthcare and medical education in India. The institute's foundation stone was laid in January 2004 by the then vice-president of India, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat. Following observations made by the Patna High Court, the institute commenced operations on 16 July 2012, and it attained fully functional status in 2018.

As an Institute of National Importance functioning autonomously under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, AIIMS Patna serves as a centre for medical education, patient care and medical research in the eastern Indian state of Bihar.
