Background

Kalady, situated on the banks of the Periyar river, is a pilgrimage and educational centre owing to its association with Adi Shankaracharya, the proponent of the Advaita Vedanta school of Hindu philosophy. The Adi Shankara Trust, which manages the institute, also runs schools, an arts and science college, and other educational ventures in the same neighbourhood, forming a contiguous campus environment in Mattoor and surrounding areas of Kalady.

ASIET was established as part of an effort to expand technical education facilities in central Kerala, providing students from Ernakulam, Thrissur and adjoining districts with access to AICTE-aligned engineering programmes within commuting distance.

Academics

The institute offers Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programmes across several conventional and emerging branches of engineering. The departments typically include:

  • Computer Science and Engineering
  • Electronics and Communication Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronics Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Information Technology

Postgraduate offerings include Master of Technology (M.Tech) programmes in selected specialisations and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme. Departments also coordinate research activity, student projects and industry-linked workshops. The academic calendar, syllabus and examinations follow the regulations prescribed by KTU; earlier batches were affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, before the technological university was constituted in Kerala.

Departments and centres

In addition to the engineering departments, the institute houses departments of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Humanities that handle foundational coursework for first-year students. Specialised laboratories support teaching in areas such as VLSI design, communication systems, computer networks, thermal engineering, structural engineering and computer-aided design.

Campus and facilities

The campus is set within the broader Adi Shankara educational complex at Mattoor, Kalady. Facilities commonly available on engineering campuses of this scale are present, including:

  • Departmental and central laboratories
  • A central library with print and digital resources
  • Computer centres and Wi-Fi connectivity
  • Seminar halls and an auditorium
  • Hostels for male and female students
  • Canteen, transport service and medical assistance
  • Sports grounds and indoor games facilities

The institute maintains a training and placement cell that coordinates campus recruitment, internships, aptitude training and skill-development programmes in collaboration with industry partners.

Admissions

Admission to B.Tech programmes is primarily through the Kerala Engineering Architecture Medical (KEAM) entrance examination conducted by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, Government of Kerala. Seats are allotted under government and management quotas as per state norms. Lateral entry into the second year is open to diploma holders through the relevant state-level test. M.Tech admissions consider GATE scores and state-conducted tests, while MBA admissions are based on KMAT, CMAT or equivalent qualifying examinations followed by group discussion and interview.

Student life
