Jaiswal was born in Bhadohi, a town in Uttar Pradesh known for its carpet industry. As a young teenager, he moved to Mumbai to pursue cricket. His early years in the city are widely reported to have been difficult: he stayed for an extended period in a tent at the Azad Maidan, the historic public ground in south Mumbai, while playing club cricket and supplementing his income through small jobs. He was eventually taken under the guidance of coach Jwala Singh, who became his mentor and provided him a stable training and living environment.
Jaiswal first attracted national attention in age-group cricket. Playing in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2019, he became the youngest cricketer to score a List A double century, achieving the feat at the age of 17 against Jharkhand. He was a leading run-scorer for India at the 2020 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup held in South Africa, where India finished as runners-up. He was named Player of the Tournament for his consistency through the event.
In first-class cricket, he represents Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy. He has scored multiple centuries and double centuries in domestic competitions across formats, establishing himself as one of the most prolific young batsmen on the Indian domestic circuit.
Jaiswal was signed by the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL auction ahead of the 2020 season and has been a mainstay of the franchise since. He developed into a regular opener for the Royals, forming a productive opening partnership with Jos Buttler. In the 2023 IPL season, he scored the fastest fifty in IPL history at the time, reaching the milestone in 13 balls against the Kolkata Knight Riders, and finished as one of the top run-getters in the competition.
Jaiswal made his Test and Twenty20 International debuts for India in 2023 during the tour of the West Indies. He scored a century on Test debut, becoming one of a small group of Indian batsmen to do so. He followed this with significant performances in the home Test series against England in 2024, including back-to-back double centuries, which placed him among the youngest Indians to record multiple Test double tons. He was subsequently established as India's first-choice Test opener and also became a regular fixture in the Twenty20 International side.
Jaiswal is regarded as one of the most promising top-order batsmen of his generation in Indian cricket. His batting is marked by a strong base, free flow of the bat through the line, and an aggressive intent against new-ball bowling. His personal background, from playing tennis-ball cricket in Uttar Pradesh and living rough on the maidans of Mumbai to representing India, has often been cited in Indian cricket discourse as a contemporary example of the game's role as a route of social mobility.
