XIMB was set up as part of an effort to provide professional management education in the eastern part of India, drawing on the broader Jesuit tradition of higher education exemplified by institutions such as St. Xavier's College, Kolkata, and the Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI) in Jamshedpur. The Odisha Jesuit Society, the Jesuit province responsible for educational and social work in the region, partnered with the state government to build the institute on a campus in Bhubaneswar.
Over time, the institute expanded its academic offerings beyond its flagship postgraduate programme in management to include programmes in rural management, human resource management, business analytics and executive education, and developed research and consulting activity in areas relevant to the region's economy.
XIMB is regarded as one of the prominent management institutes in eastern India, and it forms part of the wider network of Jesuit-run higher education institutions in the country. Its association with Xavier University has expanded the academic ecosystem around it, with new schools covering areas such as rural management, sustainability, communications, human resource management and commerce. The institute is frequently included in national rankings and surveys of Indian business schools.
