XLRI was founded in 1949 in the steel city of Jamshedpur, then a major centre of Indian industry through the Tata enterprises. The institute was established by Fr. Quinn Enright, S.J., with the original aim of training people in industrial relations and labour management against the backdrop of post-Independence industrialisation. The original name, Xavier Labour Relations Institute, reflected this initial focus, though the institute later broadened its scope to encompass general management education.
The school is administered by the Jesuits of the Jamshedpur Province and operates as an autonomous institution. Although it is not part of any university system, its postgraduate diplomas in management are widely accepted as equivalent to MBA degrees by Indian and international academic and professional bodies.
XLRI offers a range of management education programmes, including:
Admission to XLRI's flagship two-year postgraduate programmes is conducted primarily through the Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT), a national-level management entrance examination administered by XLRI. XAT scores are also used by a number of other member institutions of the Xavier Association of Management Institutes (XAMI) for their own admissions.
XLRI is regarded as a pioneer of formal human resource and industrial relations education in India. Its alumni occupy senior positions in Indian and multinational corporations, public sector undertakings, consulting firms, and academia. The institute is consistently ranked among the leading business schools in India, and its emphasis on ethics, social responsibility, and people-management reflects its Jesuit educational tradition.
