The college was founded under the patronage of the princely state of Sangli during the era of British India. Sangli, situated on the banks of the Krishna river, was a centre of education and culture in the region, and the establishment of Willingdon College added a major institution of higher learning that drew students from across the surrounding districts of southern Maharashtra and parts of northern Karnataka.
The institution was set up to provide modern collegiate education in the arts and sciences at a time when such opportunities in the region were limited. Over the decades it has expanded its academic offerings to include a range of disciplines across the humanities, natural sciences and commerce.
Willingdon College conducts undergraduate and postgraduate courses across multiple faculties. The college is affiliated to a state university in Maharashtra and follows the curriculum and examination pattern prescribed by the affiliating university. Departments typically include subjects such as English, Marathi, Hindi, history, economics, political science, sociology, mathematics, physics, chemistry, botany, zoology, and commerce.
The college campus is located in Sangli city. The campus houses academic buildings, laboratories, a library, and grounds used for sports and cultural activities. The institution participates in inter-collegiate sporting and cultural events organised under its affiliating university.
As one of the long-established colleges in Sangli district, Willingdon College has played a notable role in the educational development of the region. It has educated generations of students from western Maharashtra, contributing alumni to fields such as administration, education, science, literature, and the arts.
