WBUAFS was established by the Government of West Bengal to consolidate and strengthen education and research in the allied sectors of veterinary medicine, animal sciences, dairying, and fisheries. Prior to the establishment of the university, these disciplines were taught at constituent colleges affiliated to general universities in West Bengal. The creation of a dedicated university enabled focused academic programmes, specialised research, and integrated extension activities aimed at supporting the livestock and fisheries economy of the state.
The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes through its faculties and constituent colleges. Major academic divisions cover veterinary and animal sciences, dairy technology, and fishery sciences. The undergraduate Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc. & A.H.) programme is offered in line with norms prescribed by the Veterinary Council of India.
WBUAFS conducts research on livestock health, animal nutrition, breed improvement, dairy products, fish biology, and aquaculture systems relevant to West Bengal's agro-climatic conditions. The university also runs extension programmes targeted at farmers, fish cultivators, and rural entrepreneurs, including training in scientific livestock management and inland fisheries.
As West Bengal has a strong rural economy supported by livestock rearing, dairying, and inland fisheries, WBUAFS plays an important role in developing trained veterinarians, fishery scientists, and dairy professionals. The university supports state initiatives in animal disease control, food security, and the modernisation of fisheries and animal husbandry.
