NUJS was set up by the Government of West Bengal under a state legislation, the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences Act, 1999. It is part of the broader National Law University movement in India, which began with the establishment of the National Law School of India University in Bangalore and was followed by the creation of similar autonomous law universities across various states. These institutions were envisioned as centres of excellence focused on the integrated study of law combined with the social sciences and humanities.
The university is governed by a General Council, an Executive Council and an Academic Council, with the Chief Justice of India serving as the Chancellor in keeping with the model adopted by several National Law Universities. The day-to-day administration is led by the Vice-Chancellor.
NUJS offers an integrated five-year undergraduate law programme leading to the B.A., LL.B. (Honours) degree, postgraduate programmes in law (LL.M.), as well as doctoral research opportunities (Ph.D.). The institution also runs Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) and various diploma and certificate programmes through both regular and distance modes.
Admission to the undergraduate and postgraduate law programmes is conducted through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), the centralised entrance examination shared by the consortium of National Law Universities.
The curriculum integrates traditional subjects such as constitutional law, criminal law, contracts, jurisprudence, and international law with interdisciplinary areas like law and economics, intellectual property, public policy, and human rights. NUJS also publishes academic journals and hosts moot court competitions, conferences and seminars on contemporary legal issues.
The university is situated in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, placing it within proximity of the Calcutta High Court—one of the oldest High Courts in India—and a vibrant legal community. The campus houses academic blocks, a law library, hostels, and facilities for moot court training.
As a member of the consortium of National Law Universities, NUJS has contributed to shaping legal education standards in India and has produced graduates who serve as advocates, judicial officers, academics, policymakers, and corporate counsel both in India and abroad. It is generally counted alongside the older National Law Universities as part of the top tier of Indian law schools.
