Wani lies in the eastern part of Yavatmal district, close to the boundary with Chandrapur district. The town is situated on the Deccan plateau and is drained by tributaries of the Wardha river system. The terrain around the town is undulating, with patches of forest interspersed with cotton, jowar and soybean fields. The region experiences a tropical climate, with hot summers, a monsoon season from June to September, and mild winters.
The town is administered by the Wani Municipal Council, which is responsible for water supply, sanitation, road maintenance, street lighting, and local taxation. Wani is also the administrative seat of Wani tahsil, which contains a number of villages dependent on the town for markets, schools and government services.
Wani's economy is anchored by two activities: agriculture and coal mining. The surrounding countryside is part of the Vidarbha cotton belt, and Wani serves as a market town for cotton, soybean, tur (pigeon pea) and other commercial crops. Cotton ginning and pressing units, oil mills, and agricultural trade form a substantial part of the local commerce.
The town is part of the Wani–Ghugus coalfield area operated by Western Coalfields Limited (WCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited. Several underground and open-cast collieries in the vicinity provide direct and indirect employment, and the movement of coal contributes to the area's road and rail traffic.
Wani is connected by state highways to Yavatmal, Chandrapur, Nagpur and other towns of Vidarbha. The Wani railway station lies on a branch line in the South East Central Railway zone, used for both passenger services and the despatch of coal from nearby mines. Regular bus services are operated by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC).
Wani has a network of primary and secondary schools affiliated to the Maharashtra State Board, along with junior and senior colleges offering arts, science and commerce streams. Government offices typical of a tahsil headquarters — including the tahsildar's office, police station, civil court, sub-registrar, and rural hospital — are located in the town.
As a tahsil headquarters and a node of the eastern Vidarbha coal belt, Wani plays an important role in the local economy of Yavatmal district, linking agricultural hinterlands with mining areas and larger urban centres such as Nagpur and Chandrapur.
