Walchand Institute of Technology, commonly referred to as WIT Solapur, is an engineering college located in Solapur, Maharashtra. It is one of the prominent technical institutions in the Marathwada and western Maharashtra region, offering undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in engineering and technology. The institution is named in honour of the industrialist Walchand Hirachand, a significant figure in Indian industrial history. WIT is affiliated with Solapur University and has been granted autonomous status, allowing it to design its own curriculum within the broader framework of the university's academic regulations.
The college was established under the aegis of the Walchand College of Arts and Science Trust, which has a long history of educational activity in Solapur. The institution was set up with the aim of providing quality technical education to students from Solapur and the surrounding districts, a region that had historically limited access to professional engineering education. Over the decades, WIT has grown from a small engineering school into a multi-disciplinary technical institution with a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
The college is governed by a management committee and operates under the regulatory oversight of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the apex body for technical education in India. Its autonomous status enables the faculty to revise syllabi more frequently in response to industry requirements and emerging technologies.
WIT offers Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) programmes across several disciplines, including Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Information Technology, among others. Postgraduate programmes leading to the Master of Engineering (M.E.) degree are available in select specialisations.
The institution also supports research activity, with faculty members and students engaged in applied and fundamental research across engineering domains. Doctoral programmes are conducted in affiliation with Solapur University. The autonomous status of the college allows the academic council to periodically update course content, introduce elective subjects aligned with industry trends, and adopt flexible examination patterns.
The WIT campus is situated within Solapur city and houses academic blocks, departmental laboratories, a central library, and administrative offices. The library maintains a collection of technical books, journals, and digital resources to support student and faculty research. Departmental laboratories are equipped for practical training in areas such as electronics, computing, materials testing, and fluid mechanics, among others.
The campus includes facilities for sports and physical education, a canteen, and separate hostel accommodation for male and female students. A dedicated placement and training cell operates on campus to assist students with career preparation, industry interaction, and recruitment activities.
Admissions to undergraduate engineering programmes at WIT are conducted through the centralised process administered by the State Common Entrance Test Cell, Government of Maharashtra. Eligibility is based on performance in the Maharashtra HSC (Class XII) examination or equivalent, along with scores from the MHT-CET or other accepted national entrance examinations. Admission to postgraduate programmes follows a separate process based on GATE scores or the university's own entrance mechanism, as applicable.
WIT supports a range of co-curricular and extracurricular activities through student associations, technical clubs, and cultural committees. Technical festivals and cultural events are organised annually, providing students with opportunities to engage in competitions, workshops, and seminars beyond the regular academic schedule. Student chapters of professional bodies such as the Institution of Engineers (India) and IEEE are active on campus, facilitating exposure to the broader engineering community.
The National Service Scheme (NSS) unit at WIT organises community outreach programmes, health camps, and environmental awareness drives in collaboration with local civic bodies and non-governmental organisations.
