The operations that became Vodafone India trace their origins to Hutchison Essar, a joint venture between Hong Kong–based Hutchison Telecommunications International and India's Essar Group. Hutchison Essar offered mobile services across Indian circles under brands including Hutch and, earlier, Orange in some markets.
In 2007, Vodafone Group acquired Hutchison's controlling stake in Hutchison Essar, marking one of the largest foreign direct investments in the Indian telecommunications sector at the time. The company was subsequently rebranded as Vodafone Essar, and later, after Vodafone consolidated its ownership, simply as Vodafone India.
During its existence, Vodafone India offered prepaid and postpaid mobile voice services, SMS, mobile internet over 2G, 3G and 4G LTE networks, enterprise connectivity, and value-added services. The company operated across all telecom circles in India and competed primarily with Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular, Reliance Communications, and later Reliance Jio and state-run BSNL.
Vodafone India's parent company was involved in a long-running tax dispute with Indian authorities relating to the 2007 acquisition of Hutchison's Indian assets, a matter that became a notable case in Indian tax and international investment law. The dispute concerned the applicability of capital gains tax on the offshore transfer of Indian assets and was contested before Indian courts and international arbitration.
Vodafone India played a major role in expanding mobile penetration in India during the 2000s and 2010s. Its advertising campaigns, particularly the Zoozoo characters and the Hutch pug, became part of Indian popular culture. The 2018 merger with Idea Cellular reshaped the Indian telecom landscape, which by then had consolidated to a small number of large private operators alongside the public sector incumbents.
