Vishal began his career in the Tamil film industry behind the camera, working as an assistant director to the actor and filmmaker Arjun. This early apprenticeship in production and direction preceded his transition to acting.
Vishal made his debut as a lead actor with the romantic thriller Chellamae (2004). He subsequently established himself in mainstream Tamil cinema through a series of action-oriented films, including Sandakozhi, Thimiru, Thaamirabharani and Malaikottai.
Vishal later set up his own production studio, Vishal Film Factory, through which he has produced as well as acted in films. Productions associated with the banner include Pandiya Naadu (2013), Naan Sigappu Manithan (2014) and Poojai (2014).
Vishal is recognised as one of the action-genre lead actors of contemporary Tamil cinema, and his establishment of Vishal Film Factory marked his expansion from performer to film producer. The Kalaimamani conferred on him in 2006 reflects state recognition of his early contributions to the industry.
