Background

The original Vikram (1986) was conceived by Kamal Haasan, who also wrote the story and produced the film through Raaj Kamal Films International, his banner founded in 1981. Directed by Rajasekhar, the film was an espionage adventure with science-fiction elements, featuring music composed by Ilaiyaraaja. It cast Kamal Haasan as a spy named Vikram tasked with retrieving a stolen missile, and was among the early Tamil films to attempt a James Bond–style spy thriller format.

Films

Vikram (1986)

Directed by Rajasekhar and produced by Kamal Haasan, the film starred Kamal Haasan, Sathyaraj, Dimple Kapadia, and Lissy. The plot revolved around the recovery of a missile codenamed "Salamander" stolen from India by a fictional adversary state. Songs such as "Meendum Meendum Vaa" became popular. The film was a moderate commercial performer and gained a cult following over later years.

Vikram (2022)

Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and produced by Kamal Haasan under Raaj Kamal Films International, the 2022 film featured Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi, and Fahadh Faasil in the principal roles, with Suriya appearing in an extended cameo as Rolex. The music was composed by Anirudh Ravichander, with cinematography by Girish Gangadharan and editing by Philomin Raj.

The film is structured as a continuation of Kaithi (2019) and acts as a narrative bridge within the Lokesh Cinematic Universe. While it shares its title and lead actor with the 1986 film, the 2022 release is widely considered a spiritual successor rather than a direct sequel; it nevertheless retains the character name "Vikram" and references elements of the earlier work, including the use of the song "Pala Pala" as a callback.

Vikram (2022) was released theatrically on 3 June 2022 and became one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of the year, with strong performance in domestic and overseas markets.

Vikram 2 (announced)

Following the success of the 2022 film, Kamal Haasan and Lokesh Kanagaraj publicly indicated plans for a sequel. The project has been referenced in industry announcements as part of the future slate of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe.

Lokesh Cinematic Universe context

The 2022 Vikram ties into a shared continuity initiated by Lokesh Kanagaraj's Kaithi (2019), starring Karthi as Dilli. Subsequent films, including Leo (2023) starring Vijay, are also positioned within this universe. The narrative threads involve drug syndicates, vigilante operatives, and law-enforcement squads operating across Chennai and surrounding regions.

Significance

The franchise is notable for two distinct reasons. The 1986 film represents one of Kamal Haasan's early attempts at producing a high-concept spy thriller in Tamil cinema, featuring large-scale action set pieces uncommon for the period. The 2022 film, in turn, marked a major commercial resurgence for Kamal Haasan after a gap of several years and is regarded as a landmark in the contemporary Tamil action genre, helping consolidate the Lokesh Cinematic Universe as a sustained crossover franchise.
