In 2005, he founded the political party Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), which contested Tamil Nadu's electoral arena as a third-front alternative to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

Background and early life

Born Vijayaraj Alagarswami in Madurai, Vijayakanth came from a family with roots in the Tamil heartland. He adopted the screen name Vijayakanth on entering the Tamil film industry in the late 1970s. He married Premalatha, who later played an active role in DMDK organisational work.

Film career

Vijayakanth made his debut in Inikkum Ilamai in 1979. Over the 1980s and 1990s, he became one of the leading mass-appeal heroes of Tamil cinema, often playing policemen, soldiers and rural strongmen. His action-driven roles and screen image of an upright, justice-seeking protagonist drew comparisons with M. G. Ramachandran, leading admirers to call him Karuppu MGR (the dark-skinned MGR).

Notable films

  • Sattam Oru Iruttarai (1981)
  • Doore Theeya Vendam and other 1980s social and action dramas
  • Captain Prabhakaran (1991), which marked his 100th film and gave rise to the Captain title
  • Honest Raj (1994)
  • Vaanathaippola (2000)
  • Narasimha (2001)
  • Ramana (2002), directed by A. R. Murugadoss, addressing anti-corruption themes
  • Engal Anna (2004)
  • Sabash Sariyana Potti and the political-themed Arasangam (2008)

He produced several films through his banner Captain Cine Creations and later ventured into television with Captain TV.

Political career

Vijayakanth launched the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam on 14 September 2005 in Madurai, positioning the party as an alternative to the dominant Dravidian parties.

2006 Assembly election

The DMDK contested all 234 seats in the 2006 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election. Vijayakanth was the only DMDK candidate to win, securing the Vridhachalam (Virudhachalam) seat. The party polled close to 8 per cent of the popular vote, an unusual debut performance for a new outfit in the state.

2011 Assembly election

In alliance with the AIADMK led by J. Jayalalithaa, the DMDK won 29 seats in the 2011 Assembly election, becoming the second-largest party in the House after the AIADMK. As leader of the second-largest party, Vijayakanth was recognised as the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, since the AIADMK formed the government and the DMK chose not to claim the post under the prevailing strength.

Later electoral phases

The DMDK contested the 2014 Lok Sabha election as part of the National Democratic Alliance-led front in Tamil Nadu but did not win seats. In the 2016 Assembly election, the party fought as part of the People's Welfare Front along with the MDMK, CPI, CPI(M) and others, and failed to win any seats. The party's vote share and organisational presence declined in subsequent elections, though it continued to contest as a recognised state party.

Health and death

Vijayakanth's public appearances reduced significantly from the late 2010s due to ill-health. He was hospitalised on multiple occasions in Chennai. He died on 28 December 2023 in Chennai. He was accorded state honours at his funeral, attended by leaders across party lines.

Significance

Vijayakanth is regarded as one of the few Tamil film stars after MGR and others to translate cinematic popularity into a measurable electoral base, even if briefly. The DMDK's 2006 vote share and 2011 seat tally demonstrated the residual capacity of star-led parties in Tamil Nadu's bipolar Dravidian politics. His film persona, built around themes of honesty, anti-corruption and rural valour, intersected closely with his political messaging.
