Vidyaranyapura

Vidyaranyapura is a residential suburb in the northern part of Bangalore, the capital city of the Indian state of Karnataka. It forms part of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) area and lies in the Yelahanka zone, developing rapidly since the late twentieth century from a peripheral locality into a populous middle-class neighbourhood.

Etymology

The locality is named after Vidyaranya, the medieval scholar and saint associated with the founding of the Vijayanagara Empire in the fourteenth century. The suffix pura is a common Kannada term meaning "town" or "settlement".

Geography

Vidyaranyapura is situated in north Bangalore, bordered by neighbourhoods such as Sahakar Nagar, Kodigehalli, Jalahalli, and Doddabommasandra. It lies a short distance south of Yelahanka and is connected to the central city by routes leading through Hebbal and the Outer Ring Road. The terrain is gently undulating and forms part of the Bangalore plateau, with several lakes in the vicinity, including Doddabommasandra Lake.

Civic administration

Vidyaranyapura is administered as a ward under the BBMP. It falls within the Yelahanka assembly constituency for elections to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and is part of the Bangalore North Lok Sabha constituency for parliamentary elections.

Development and demographics

The suburb grew through a combination of Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) layouts and private residential developments. It is largely a middle-income residential area, with apartment complexes, independent houses, and house-building cooperative society layouts. Population density has increased significantly with the expansion of Bangalore's urban footprint towards Yelahanka and the Kempegowda International Airport corridor.

Vidyaranyapura is served by Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) buses connecting it to Majestic (Kempegowda Bus Station), Shivajinagar, Yeshwantpur, and other parts of the city. The nearest railway stations include Yeshwantpur Junction and Yelahanka Junction. Kempegowda International Airport at Devanahalli is accessible via the Ballari Road (NH 44) corridor.
