Veer Kunwar Singh University is a state university with its headquarters at Arrah in Bihar. It was established on 22 October 1992 under the Bihar University Act 1976, as amended by Act 9 of 1992. The university is named after Kunwar Singh, a national hero and a distinguished freedom fighter of the 1857 uprising.
The university is included in the list of recognised universities under Section 2(f) of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act. Its 17 constituent colleges and one affiliated college receive financial assistance from the UGC by virtue of having been constituent or affiliated colleges of the erstwhile Magadh University, Gaya, prior to the formation of Veer Kunwar Singh University.
The university is also recognised by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), with the institutional ID 1-44497171004, for programmes including the Master of Business Administration and the Master in Computer Science. It is listed by the Department of Higher Education, Government of India, under the code U-0077, and is associated with the Institution's Innovation Council with the ID IC202431006. For its Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) course, the university is recognised by the National Council for Teacher Education under code APE00529.
