The narrative centres on the contrasting lives of two girls — Iccha, the daughter of a maid, and Tapasya, the daughter of the wealthy Thakur family her mother serves. Raised together as childhood friends in the fictional household of the Thakurs, their bond is gradually tested by social inequality, envy, and rivalry over love and identity. The title itself refers to Iccha being made to wear Tapasya's old, discarded clothes, a recurring motif underlining the central theme of class difference.
The show featured a large ensemble cast that evolved across multiple generational leaps over its run.
The child actors who played young Iccha and young Tapasya in the early phase of the show received significant attention before the time leap introduced the adult leads.
Rashmi Sharma Telefilms, the banner behind several successful Hindi serials, produced Uttaran for Colors TV, which had launched in 2008 and used the show as part of its early prime-time line-up. The series was largely shot in Mumbai with portions filmed on outdoor sets designed to reflect a small-town setting in central India.
Uttaran consistently figured among the higher-rated Hindi general entertainment serials during the early 2010s and contributed substantially to Colors TV's prime-time performance. It went through several narrative leaps, introducing new generations of characters, a strategy commonly used to extend the lifespan of Indian daily soaps. The show ran for over six years and was dubbed and telecast in several other languages, including Tamil and Malayalam, on regional networks. It also aired internationally in markets with significant South Asian viewership.
The series and its lead actors received nominations and awards at Indian television award ceremonies, including the Colors Golden Petal Awards and the Indian Telly Awards, particularly in categories recognising popular drama serials and lead performances.
Within Indian television history, Uttaran is noted for popularising the "two girls, contrasting backgrounds" template on Hindi prime time and for sustaining a long run on Colors TV during the channel's formative years. It helped establish actors such as Tina Datta and Rashami Desai as household names and is often cited alongside other long-form Colors serials of the same period.
