The story is set in Kota, Rajasthan, and centres on two girls—Ichha, the daughter of a maid, and Tapasya, the daughter of the wealthy Thakur family her mother serves. Despite their close childhood friendship, the disparity in their social standing and Ichha's habit of wearing Tapasya's hand-me-down clothes lays the foundation for jealousy, rivalry, and the long-running conflict that drives the narrative. The show subsequently moved through generational leaps, focusing on the next generation of characters as the storyline progressed.

Uttaran was produced by Rashmi Sharma Telefilms, a banner known for several long-running Hindi television dramas. The show used multiple time leaps to extend its narrative across generations, a technique common in Indian daily soaps to refresh storylines and introduce younger leads. Outdoor sequences were filmed in locations evoking Rajasthan, while studio work was carried out in Mumbai.
The serial was a flagship show on Colors TV during its early years and contributed significantly to the channel's establishment in the Hindi general entertainment space following its 2008 launch. Uttaran consistently featured among the higher-rated Hindi serials of its time and was dubbed and broadcast in several regional languages and overseas markets. Over its run of more than 1,500 episodes, the show received nominations and awards at various Indian television award ceremonies, with cast members recognised for their performances.
Uttaran is remembered as one of the defining long-running soaps of Colors TV, alongside other shows of its era, and helped launch or consolidate the careers of actors such as Tina Datta, Rashami Desai, and Nandish Sandhu. Its central motif of a "hand-me-down" relationship became a cultural reference point in discussions of Indian television's portrayal of class and friendship.
