The electricity sector in Uttar Pradesh was historically managed by the Uttar Pradesh State Electricity Board (UPSEB), which handled generation, transmission and distribution as a vertically integrated utility. Following the policy of unbundling state electricity boards in line with reforms in the Indian power sector, UPSEB was reorganised, and the generation function was carved out into a separate corporate entity.
UPRVUNL was constituted as a successor company to take over thermal generation assets earlier operated by UPSEB. Alongside it, separate companies were established for transmission (Uttar Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation Limited), for distribution through regional discoms, and for hydroelectric generation (Uttar Pradesh Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited).
UPRVUNL operates coal-fired thermal power stations located across Uttar Pradesh. The Nigam's mandate covers planning, construction, operation and maintenance of state-sector thermal generation capacity, with electricity sold primarily to distribution licensees within the state.
Several of these stations have undergone capacity expansion through new units, while older units have been retired or refurbished as part of modernisation efforts.
As one of the largest state-owned generation utilities in India by installed capacity, UPRVUNL plays a central role in meeting the electricity demand of Uttar Pradesh, the country's most populous state. Its plants supplement supply received from central-sector generators such as NTPC and from independent power producers under long-term power purchase agreements.
