Geography

Unnao district occupies a stretch of the Gangetic plain. The Ganga forms much of its southern and south-western boundary, separating it from Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat and Fatehpur districts, while the Sai river flows through the district on its way to join the Gomti. The terrain is largely flat alluvial plain, suited to intensive agriculture, with patches of ravines along the Ganga. The district is bordered by Hardoi to the north, Lucknow to the east, and Rae Bareli to the south-east.

Administration

The district is part of the Lucknow division and is administered by a District Magistrate. For administrative purposes it is divided into tehsils including Unnao (Sadar), Hasanganj, Safipur, Purwa and Bighapur, along with several community development blocks. The district contains a number of nagar palika parishads and nagar panchayats, with Unnao town serving as the principal urban centre. Other notable towns include Bangarmau, Safipur, Purwa, Gangaghat and Bighapur.

History

The area corresponds to part of the historical region of Awadh. Local tradition links the founding of Unnao town to medieval Rajput chieftains, and the area later came under the Delhi Sultanate and Mughal Empire, before being absorbed into the Nawabi state of Awadh. After the annexation of Awadh by the British East India Company in 1856, the territory passed under colonial administration. The district saw significant activity during the Indian Rebellion of 1857; the village of Nanamau and other locations along the Ganga witnessed troop movements between Kanpur and Lucknow. Unnao continued as a district under the United Provinces and, after independence, within the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Economy

The economy of Unnao district is based on agriculture and allied activities, with wheat, rice, sugarcane, pulses and oilseeds among the principal crops. The district also has an industrial base, particularly in leather processing and tanning concentrated around Unnao town and adjoining areas, which forms part of the wider Kanpur–Unnao leather cluster. Small-scale manufacturing, textiles and chemical units are also present. The proximity to Kanpur and Lucknow, both major urban and industrial centres, has shaped patterns of employment and trade.

Transport

Unnao lies on the Lucknow–Kanpur corridor and is well connected by road and rail. National Highway 27 (formerly NH 25) passes through the district, linking it with Lucknow and Kanpur. Unnao Junction is a station on the Northern Railway's Lucknow–Kanpur line. The Lucknow–Agra Expressway also passes through parts of the district, providing a high-speed link to western Uttar Pradesh.

Demographics and culture

Hindi is the principal language of administration and daily life, with Awadhi widely spoken in rural areas. The district shares the cultural traditions of Awadh, including its folk music, cuisine and festivals. Religious sites along the Ganga, such as ghats at Shuklaganj and Baksar, draw pilgrims, and the district contains numerous temples and dargahs reflecting its composite heritage.
