The university was founded as the University of Bombay on 18 July 1857, following the recommendations of Sir Charles Wood's Education Despatch of 1854. It was one of the three earliest modern universities established in British India that year, alongside the University of Calcutta and the University of Madras. The institution was originally modelled on the University of London, functioning as an examining body that affiliated colleges and conferred degrees.
In 1996, the university was renamed the University of Mumbai, in line with the renaming of the city from Bombay to Mumbai.
The university has two principal campuses in Mumbai:
The university offers programmes across the disciplines of arts, commerce, science, law, technology, management, medicine and interdisciplinary studies. It functions both as a teaching university through its postgraduate departments and as an affiliating university for a large number of undergraduate and postgraduate colleges in the Mumbai metropolitan region and parts of the Konkan division of Maharashtra, including the districts of Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg.
Faculties at the university include Arts, Science, Commerce, Law, Technology, and Fine Arts, among others. Affiliated institutions include several long-established colleges of Mumbai such as Elphinstone College, St. Xavier's College, Wilson College, Sydenham College, Government Law College, and Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS).
As one of the three foundational modern universities of India, the University of Mumbai played a central role in the spread of higher education in western India. It has produced a wide range of notable alumni, including jurists, scientists, writers, industrialists, political leaders and Nobel laureates. The Rajabai Clock Tower and the Mumbai University Fort Campus form part of the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai, which were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2018.
The university is recognised by the University Grants Commission and has received accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
